As Black and White

The Pakistani government along with the media always try to show everything as black and white to it’s people i.e. what is clear and what is in their point of view. It is in their power to spread the news as they want to; as “black and white” but there are always and always loopholes present in every story which they try to cover.

This is shown by painting a division through black and white colour and right in between are red hoops attached that symbolize the loopholes. It is composed as a clothing. The red hoops are buttoning the two colours of “their” news.

I am a Printmaker working as a Fashion Designer. Most of the days at my workplace I deal with clients ( RICH AND SPOILED AUNTIES!!!) who constantly brag about their possession of brands and designer wear and won’t stop criticizing the “Average” lot. I was inspired by this attitude and thought of making an art piece on it.

Thanks to my workplace I came up with a non-traditional technique of Printmaking. As I have to deal with the embroidery and embellishment department I observed their procedure of transferring the motifs and patterns I draw for them onto the cloth using a mundane object as their ink….the shoe polish.
So I used the same method and medium on paper.

The “Elite” do not favour the “Average”

The “Elite” do not favour the “Average”. Here the elegant yet snobbish women are wearing a floral gold hue headdress as hair ornament which is a symbol of social status.

The “Average” wishes to be amongst “Them”.

The “Average” wishes to be amongst “Them”. Here a woman is shown without a headdress wearing an expression of admiration for the elite life and wishing to be part of it.

These two pieces were displayed at an Exhibition titled “Rediscovering Women Narratives” at the Pakistan National Council of Arts on March 10th, 2015. The exhibition will continue till April 27th, 2015.

Protest Art

As Pakistan at current is famous for all the “Dharnas” (protests) going on called “Azadi March” which is led by the nation’s beloved Imran Khan in order to bring Naya (new) Pakistan; a group of upcoming Pakistani Artists decided to sprinkle a bit of Art on these protests to show their support.

The art work was displayed on Monday September 22, 2014; right below the stage where Imran Khan stands.

I, Shanze Zohreh (Print Maker), am one of the artists who took part in this.

Here are the Digital prints I made that I would like to share.

This image shows a chair symbolising The Kursi (Chair) of Power attached to a tear gas mask as a hot air balloon. It carries a message saying that how could the one who sits on this chair order such an act of getting tear gas shelling done on it's own people!

Na Kar ( Don't Do It)

Na Kar ( Don’t Do It).  This print shows the map of Pakistan being peeled off. The text is written in our national language ‘Urdu’ which means don’t do it, in an informal way. This image is talking to the one sitting on ‘The Chair’ that don’t ruin our country Pakistan.

Here is a snapshot of the display.

Miscommunication

Miscommunication

Inspired by a conversation with a friend who trying to interpret an artwork said, “It’s like it’s speaking to me…but in Chinese.”

The image shows the Chinese script saying “Listen to me” while English is talking to itself…saying “It’s like it’s speaking to me.”

Impairing the function of a mundane object, letting it stay the same as it is, repeating it’s experience and giving it a new purpose.
There…..transforms a simple thing into being special.

Dysfunctioning the bulbs

Dog fighting: A blood sport for humans(not literally)

Rule no.1     Attack whoever you want
Rule no.2     Fight like no one’s business
Rule no.3    The winner will experience self bloated pride

Try it…its fun!

To Hrothgar  was given such glory of war, such honor of combat, that all his kin obeyed him gladly till great grew his band of youthful comrades.

Now this phrase from Beowulf struck me. What honor! What glory! of combat! A clear panorama of a strong muscular warrior(Gerard Butler from the movie 300 comes in my mind) marching with pride; taking footsteps of victory while a glorifying symphony glows this heroic figure who returns after accomplishing Bloodshed!!!

He gets respect and nobility for killing??!! Now that is bad!

This phrase forced me…literally forced me to apply it to our current era. Why are we sprinkled with magnificence while carrying out the wrong doings? The answer is because of owning “Money”! “Black Money”

It is taken that unlawful activities are performed openly and all the time. So if you generate loads and loads of money through illegal doings then you have honor and glory.

Imagine yourself as that great warrior with your head held up high as you carry your greatest weapon…MONEY!
